Community Service

About five months ago, I started volunteering with a charity that helps children and adults diagnosed with brain cancer. Many of them come from families in rural China and are preparing to travel to the U.S. for treatment — but most don’t speak any English. That’s where I come in.

Every week, I spend about 3–4 hours preparing materials and teaching live online English lessons. I make PowerPoints filled with simple dialogues and phrases about things they’ll encounter — airports, hotels, hospitals — and then we practice speaking together. At first, some students were too shy to say a word. Now, hearing them confidently say “Hello!” or “Thank you” makes my day.

This experience has changed the way I see language — not just as words, but as a bridge that connects people. It’s taught me empathy, patience, and the joy of helping someone take one small step toward feeling more at home in a new place.
